What’s your skin color? |
if you think a colour looks good on you, chances are it does. The best critic in the world is yourself, because you'll always be honest. If you feel good in something, it'll come across to other people much more than if you've just picked something because you read somewhere than it'll suit you. Though here are the most popular colours and how you're supposed to wear them, to match your skintype, hair and eye colour and the recommended shades for each of them to look your best. |
BLACK This is the color for anyone who doesn't want to go too mad. Black suits everyone - slim or curvy, black or white, blonde or brunette. |
black never goes out of fashion, and it suit pretty much any occasion. The little black dress, black knee high boots, black leather shoes, a black winter coat - all classic items. Everyone should have a pair of simple black trousers and a black t-shirt / tanktop. Black skinned girls shouldn't shy away from black clothing, but can safely play around with texture and fabric - black satin, cord, velvet, all are suitable to wear! |
| BLUE |
We all love blue jeans, so blue has become a wardrobe essential. As a rule, pale to mid blue is the easiest to wear. Royal blue suits fair skinned girls, blonde or brunette, sky blue looks amazing with a tan, and the palest blue makes latino or black skin shimmer. Navy is a great black alternative, and the exhibitionists among us should go for turquoise. It suits all skin types, especially if you wear it as eyeshadow. |
| Red |
The key to red is confidence. Some people love it and look great in it, others avoid it like the plague. A killer red dress looks fantastic with a tan, but can also look amazing on peachy skinned blondes. Asian skins or more strawberry blondes look great in cranberry, wine and burgundy reds. Black skinned girls can carry off the richest orange-reds. As a block colour, red can be quite daunting, the easiest way to wear it is as detail. A sexy oriental print, a trim, an accessory, or (to quote Gwyneth) a 'kick ass lipstick'. |
White White is probably the hardest colour to wear if you're white or Asian skinned. If your skintone has a lot of yellow in it, white can wash you out very quickly. |
However, black skinned girls or anyone who workships the sunbeds (or the St Tropex tan) will probably call this colour their best friend. I'd advise anyone who doesn't tan to avoid white completely on the bottom half, but everyone should own a crisp white shirt. If you have dark skin, a white dress or skirt will look stunning for a special occasion, but remember, it shows up dirt easily so pick your occassion carefully! |
| PURPLE |
Like blue, there's a shade of purple for everyone. Pale skin and blonde / red /b rown hair looks good in lilacs and cornflowers. Medium, Olive or skin that tans can wear richer shades like plum and violet. Black skinned girls can wear most shades of purple, but rich bright violet will really turn heads. If you've got pale far-eastern skin and lots of confidence you can wear deep black/purple - play around with texture too, you'll look amazing in dark plum satin. |
| PINK |
I think the rule that redheads shouldn't wear pink is wrong. Avoid brights like fuschia, but powder pinks will probably look cute and girlie on you. If that's your look, go for ti! Blondes (any skintone) can wear most shades of pink, including the brightest ones. It's all about confidence, but as a rule, the more ashen your hair, the paler the pinnk. Olive skinned girls should go for purpley pinks rather than reddy pinks. Pale pink suits everyone, especially black skin, which sets it off a treat. A deep tan looks good against fuschia but pick your colour carefully - if you've got anything more than a spot of reddish tone in your skin, you could end up looking like a lobster. Pink is a statement in itself so keep fabrics matte. Pink satin, particularly, suits NOBODY so avoid it like the plague unless you're being a bridesmaid! |
| GREEN |
This is the saving grace for redheads, because it suits them more than anyone else. Emerald green will set off red hair a treat. Also if you have green eyes and any hair or skin colour, green is likely to look perfect on you. Strawberry blondes through to brown with pale to mid skin will look great in rich shimmery greens (it's my favourite clothing colour, and I'm dark blonde, green eyed and pale skinned). The lighter blonde you are, the more khaki toned the colour should be to avoid going over the top. Asian skins will look great in any green that isn't too yellowy toned. Leave the limes and acids to black skinned girls who can carry them off. If your skin is quite obviously olive in tone, you should probably avoid green or pick your colour carefully, else you'll look washed out and ill. |
| YELLOW |
I've rarely seen anyone look good in yellow. It runs the risk of looking childish and cheap, so I tend to avoid it and encourage others to. Lemon is the safest option, a soft yellow, which suits brunettes. Blondes run the risk of looking 5 years old again. The darker your skin, the more marigold in colour the yellow you pick should be. But beware, people will see you coming for miles! |
| GREY and BROWN |
These colours suit anyone and stand up next to black as wardrobe staples. Chocolate brown, especially, is a failsafe clothing colour for all! |
